An air source heat pump extracts energy from the air to provide heat and hot water for your home. It uses electricity to operate its components, transferring energy from the heat source to your heating system.

How does a heat pump work?

Air source heat pumps draw heat from the air to deliver heating and hot water for both residential and commercial properties. Typically installed outside the building, these units pull ambient air across a finned heat exchanger. The refrigerant inside is then heated by an electric compressor.
The captured heat is transferred to water via a plate heat exchanger, and then distributed throughout the building to radiators, underfloor heating, or hot water tanks—functioning much like a traditional boiler.

Why do I need to measure SCoP and CoP?

Before having a heat pump commissioned, your installer will need to calculate an estimated SCoP as part of the heat loss assessment. This helps determine whether any home upgrades are required and whether your property is suitable.
Factors considered include the average outdoor air temperature in your area and the size of your existing radiators. Your installer may provide a list of recommended home improvements to help you maximise the efficiency of your heat pump. These could include upgrading insulation, such as from cavity wall to double or triple glazing, and replacing radiators with higher-output models.
Implementing these changes can enhance the performance of your heat pump. When your installer carries out the heat loss assessment in preparation for your heat pump installation, these improvements will contribute to better overall results.

What is an air source heat pump and how does it work?
An air source heat pump absorbs heat from the outside air and converts it into energy to heat your home. Even in temperatures as low as -20°C, these systems can generate heat efficiently, using far less electricity than conventional heating methods.

Air-source heat pumps are highly efficient, producing 4-5 times more energy than they use. Although they require electricity to function, they are considered renewable technology due to their outstanding energy conversion efficiency.
Heat pumps are most efficient in warmer conditions, so they may need to work harder in colder weather. However, the heat pumps we offer are still effective even at temperatures as low as -25°C.

Heat pumps generally produce a noise similar to that of a fridge. As outdoor temperatures drop, the noise may increase while the system is running. However, you shouldn’t hear it indoors.
